Top buster keaton movies8/31/2023 ![]() ![]() We've watched so many Buster Keaton movies I'm not picking a favorite! This is the one we most recently watched together. When we saw it on the big screen we ( along with everyone else in the movie theater) were audibly gasping! This might be my youngest son's favorite. Here are a few of our favorite silent films to date: In addition, many old films are much shorter than today's feature films. Which Silent Movies to Watch?Įven if you don't want to commit to a full-length film, watching clips of famous movie scenes is fun, too. You want to raise critical thinkers, right? Ignoring the offense only perpetuates the damage. Instead of staying quiet and hoping my kids don't notice ( they all do) I always use these as teachable moments and encourage you to do the same. Gender stereotypes run rampant and too many of the films include racial stereotypes as well. Sometimes these movies have behaviors that make you cringe. However, to combat the after-tech tantrums, be sure to use this technique!Ī caveat. I find that the effects on my kids' brains is not quite as severe after watching an old movie that engages their imagination and requires more effort to watch than, say, a Netflix kids' show. In fact some of the same skills kids use in reading comprehension are the ones they are putting to good use when they watch a silent film. Even if they don't mention it, kids are also getting a lesson in how music informs the action in the film. It feels more theatrical than a contemporary film. Watching a silent movie is an immersive experience. Sure it's over the top, but characters express fear, wonder, confusion, love with their whole bodies. The relative lack of dialogue means that their attention is keyed up to the action–can't look away or you will miss something! Without sound, they focus on the faces and emotions. My kids love the physical slap-stick comedy of geniuses like Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd. Why should a silent film be your next pick for family movie night? Why You Should Watch Silent Films with Kids That's when I realized that watching old silent comedy films with my kids was the bee's knees. The first silent movie we saw together was Harold Lloyd's Safety Last on the big screen. It's the only time I envy all those families with big flat screens. Since we threw out our television, we watch on the laptop. Even though I limit screen time with my kids I love to show them silent movies. I decided we would watch Buster Keaton's 1924 film, Sherlock, Jr.Īnd he loved it. He was expecting to watch something on Netflix. One day a few weeks ago my son was at it again. When your kids ask for screen time, exactly how much begging can you take before you give in? 2 minutes? 10? Do you hold your ground despite their determination to wear you down? I've developed a thick skin during my career as " the mean mom who limits screen time," so my kids know I mean business but that doesn't stop them, especially my 10 year old, from trying. Information about content and age-appropriateness for specific films can be found on Common Sense Media and. Films exhibited don't necessarily reflect the views of the Hollywood Theatre. In general, the Hollywood Theatre does not provide content advisories about the subject matter shown in our theatre. "Self-referentiality, impeccable stunts and eye-popping cinematography: Keaton's grace and visual wit are unmatched even today." Tom Shone - London Times (1924): Local movie theatre projectionist (Buster Keaton) longs to be a detective, and puts his meagre skills to work when he is framed by a rival for stealing his girlfriend's father's pocketwatch. ![]() Among the gifts is a mail order house kit you can “easily put together in one week” It doesn't help that Buster's rival for Sybil switches the numbers on the crates containing the house parts. ONE WEEK (1920): Buster and Sybil exit a chapel as newlyweds. Organist Dean Lemire will be performing his original scores on the mighty Hollywood Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. Back by popular demand…Buster Keaton “The Great Stoneface.” We are screening two of his best and most comedic films plus a special cartoon! ![]()

Aer sf slinbag 28/30/2023 ![]() ![]() It’s rough and tough and ready for some heavy stuff. Like most of the products in their Active Collection, the Aer Sling Bag 3 is made of a sturdy 1680D Cordura Ballistic Nylon. ![]() We’ll get into the nitty-gritty of that later. And we know a thing or two-we literally wrote the guide on slings. Several members of our team who vary in height tried it out with similar results. We found that it can cut into your chest at an awkward angle, and the bottom of the bag tends to stick out away from your body. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find a way to get comfortable with the carry strap. The Aer Active Collection 3.0-Aer Sling Bag 3, Aer Duffel Pack 3, and Aer Fit Pack 3. We used it for two weeks while biking between the office and yoga and had high hopes for it as a contender to bridge the sling, backpack divide. The Sling Bag 3 is spacious enough for a laptop, has a compartment for shoes, and excellent internal organization for tech gear. It’s part of Aer’s Active Collection 3.0, which includes a whole host of duffel bags and daypacks for those of us trying to balance the fit life and work life. ![]() The Aer Sling Bag 3 was designed for the busy person on the go who’s knocking out their morning cardio before work. But what about when you have more to carry and don’t want to wear both a backpack and a sling? What if there was one product that could somehow function as both? What if we told you the Aer Sling Bag 3 may be precisely what you’re looking for? Aer Sling Bag 3 | Ready to roll. Love them or hate them there’s no denying their convenience when going through TSA or carrying your essentials day-to-day. Slings can be such a polarizing piece of gear. ![]()

Diet for o negative blood8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() If a particular high-prevalence antigen is missing from your red blood cells, then you are “negative” for that blood group. If you lack one that 99.99 percent of people are positive for, then you have very rare blood. ![]() If you lack an antigen that 99 percent of people in the world are positive for, then your blood is considered rare. Some 160 of the 342 blood-group antigens are “high-prevalence,” which means that they are found on the red blood cells of most people. It is the presence or absence of particular antigens that determines someone’s blood type. On the surface of every one of our red blood cells, we have up to 342 antigens-molecules capable of triggering the production of specialized proteins called antibodies. It would be straightforward if we all had the same blood. Hence the hundreds of millions of people flowing through blood-donation centers across the world, and the thousands of vehicles transporting bags of blood to processing centers and hospitals. If we lose a lot of blood in surgery or an accident, we need more of it-fast. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all the cells and tissues in our body. In 50 years, researchers have turned up only 40 or so other people on the planet with the same precious, lifesaving blood in their veins. Very few people in the world knew his blood type did-could-exist. Surely it was impossible for this man seated beside her to be alive, let alone apparently healthy? But when she read the details closely, her eyes widened. The nurse in Annemasse, France, could tell from the label on the blood bag destined for Paris that this blood was pretty unusual. It was quicker that way: If the man donated in Switzerland, his blood would be delayed while paperwork was filled out and authorizations sought. ![]()

Black best friend paragraphs8/30/2023 ![]() Every time you realize this was for the best, but just wish you could tell them you finally got that internship you had spent months dreaming about. It’s the unfinished plans and promises did they ever end up confronting their ex like they said they would? It’s this sinking feeling in your chest every time you realize they’re not coming back. You trusted them to not let you fall, even though you could already see them slipping on the ice. When you break down in the middle of making plans to go skating, because they were the one who held your hand as you clung to the rink. It feels like a void eating at you when you least expect it. Like you don’t know who you are without them. It feels like being ripped apart and not into perfect halves. Like you had spent the whole day thrashing against the waves and could finally backfloat to the shore. Their presence was comforting in a way you couldn’t explain even if you tried. And when you needed each other you were there, even if it just meant listening to them sob on the phone for hours. They knew how to give you tough love and advice without ever attacking you. You had unspoken rules that no one understood. No, this friend - your best friend - just knew you in a way you couldn’t possibly know yourself. ![]() You didn’t need them to do those things because you had other friends for that. ![]() It wasn’t a deal breaker that they absolutely refused to watch “The Good Place,” despite the fact you had just binge-watched it for days. To listen to the same music you did or hate contact sports with the same burning passion. But you didn’t need them to like the same things you liked. They were almost your opposite in a way, at least in every way noticeable to the people around you. It didn’t matter how much you changed or outgrew your friends at home they just seemed like they’d always be in your life no matter what.Ī best friend who didn’t even have the same interests as you. The kind of best friend you were proud of having by your side for so long despite everything you’d gone through, because you went through it together. The best friend who managed to stand the test of time, who was constant even as everyone else walked in and out of your life. One you thought you couldn’t possibly lose. What does it feel like to lose a best friend? ![]()

![]() ![]() The one and only XB2C-1 prototype crashed shortly after its maiden flight in November of 1940, with the accident occurring in February of 1941. Standard armament included a pair of fixed forward-firing 20mm cannons (4 x 12.7mm heavy machine guns in earlier production models) in the wings and a pair of 7.62mm M1919 Browning air-cooled machine guns in the rear cockpit. Ordnance could be held in the internal bomb bay (including a single torpedo) as well as along two underwing hardpoints. The system would eventually graduate to field high-explosive, unguided rockets under the wings along with its traditional load of bombs in the arsenal. The US Navy Helldiver was produced with a reinforced and retractable undercarriage as well as an arrestor hook for carrier operations. ![]() The design was specifically engineered with a large-area tail assembly for improved handling. The torpedo-like fuselage became something of a hallmark of the series and a surely identifiable design feature. The fuselage sported straight wings with a tapered trailing edge and rounded tips. The aircraft was fitted with a single Wright-powered engine at the extreme forward of the fuselage powering a three-bade propeller. The SB2C, incidentally, became the third in a long line of aircraft to bear the moniker of "Helldiver" and would go on to earn a substantial combat record in the war. The Helldiver was conceived as a metal, low-monoplane wing design fielding a crew of two seated in tandem within a long cockpit - the pilot in the forward area and the tail gunner in the aft. The SB2C went on to replace the aging Douglas SBD Dauntless in service with the United States Navy. Originally designed in a competition to replace the aging SBC biplane series, the SB2C faced off against Brewster's entry - the XSB2A Buccaneer - with the SB2C coming out the eventual winner. The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was a rather unassuming dive bomber / reconnaissance aircraft serving throughout World War 2 beginning in 1943. ![]()

My talking angela 2 secrets8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() If you download Talking Angela for free, it’ll display banner ads at the top of the screen. If you wouldn’t type “cats” into YouTube’s search box then leave your child to get on with it, you shouldn’t leave them unattended with Talking Angela. And then watching those videos brings up more suggestions, and so on. ![]() You can also tap a “more” button to see suggestions of other videos, some of which are from Outfit7’s channel, and some of which aren’t. Not the kind of reading material you’d want for your young child. The problem here: kids can easily scroll down to the comments section (samples: “I do not know why the fuck there’re many dislikes” and “Was I the only one who thought he was spelling out fuck?”. Photograph: PR Some changes neededĪs a parent, there are some features in Talking Angela that concern me, although not the ones being cited in the Facebook hoax messages.įirst, there’s a musical-note button at the bottom right which on my smartphone launched the YouTube app with the official Talking Tom and Friends channel – starting with a video trailer for the separate My Talking Tom mobile game. YouTube comments: not always child-friendly language. It’s true that it encourages users to look into their device’s camera and make specific gestures: nod, shake head, smile, yawn or stick out their tongue, so Angela can copy it. There is also a camera feature, which has been referenced in some of the Facebook messages about Talking Angela. What can kids do when Child Mode is turned on, though? They can get Angela to repeat her words, stroke and poke her (in the non-inappropriate sense!) to see animated responses, and make birds fly onto the screen – don’t worry, she doesn’t eat them. Given the current controversy, this would be an easy but important change for Outfit7 to make. The downside of this: it’s far too easy to toggle it on and off – there’s no Pin preventing a child from tapping on the smiley face and switching it back on. If you’ve read about Angela asking kids for their names, ages or engaging in banter about clothes-swapping parties, none of this can happen if Child Mode is on. This is important, because the feature at the centre of the scary Facebook messages – Angela’s ability to text-chat with users – is turned off when Child Mode is toggled on. You’re asked if you want to turn it on the first time you run the app, and at any other point you can toggle it on or off by tapping on the little smiley face at the top right of the screen. The most important thing for parents to understand is that Talking Angela has a child mode. It follows the pattern of previous Talking Tom and Friends apps: a virtual animal who’ll squeakily repeat anything you say into your device’s microphone, while interacting with her by tapping and swiping on the screen. Talking Angela was released in December 2012 for iPhone and iPad, then in January 2013 for Android. Talking Angela has a child mode, but it's too easy to turn off. ![]()

Stop motion lights8/30/2023 ![]() The way you light characters can tell a whole story, you can choose which parts in the image stand out or not. Unless you consciously opt for natural light, as with the Dogme films of the 1990s, artificial light gives you many opportunities to better tell your story. More light, more possibilitiesĪ light-sensitive camera is practical, but it doesn’t add much to the artistic process. You see that very often, our eyes find that combination pleasant to look at. Make good use of that.Ĭontrasting left and right colors work well in action movies, blue on one side and orange on the other. With color you very quickly give meaning to the scene. Colored lightīlue is cool, orange is warm, red is ominous. If you’re filming in front of a green screen, make sure the exposure of the subject matches the exposure of the background that will be added later. If in the overall shot there is a table lamp on the left, in a close-up you also have to make sure that the main light source comes from the left. Constant light sourceĮven if you use film lamps, you have to take the layout of your scene into account. The image is sharp but the soft light makes everything flow together. Soft light creates an atmospheric and dreamy style. If your production takes place in the summer with a lot of sunlight, it makes sense to also opt for hard light when shooting indoors to maintain continuity with outdoor scenes. It comes across as direct and confrontational. Hard light produces harsh shadows and contrast. ![]() ![]() In hard light, the lamps are aimed directly at the subject or the location, in soft light they use indirect light or light with a frost filter in front of it or other filters to diffuse the light. ![]() |
